Is water a compound or a pure substance? why?

Hypothetically, if you have a couple of isolated H2O molecules, which you won't, then you would have a pure substance. All obtainable "pure" water is a homogenous mixture of a fixed proportion of water molecules to some other molecule(s) orcompound(s), or a solution.
