Answer:

Duckweed species (Spirodela, Landoltia, Lemna, Wolffiella and Wolffia) are small floating aquatic plants. They are monocotyledons of the botanical family Lemnaceae and belong to higher plants or macrophytes (Leng et al., 1995). Duckweed species are found worldwide; they are adapted to a wide variety of geographic areas and climatic zones. Until now, duckweed has been exploited as a plant for bioremediation, because of its ability to concentrate and remove pollutants from contaminated areas. In the last years, however, duckweed species are being considered as a resource for sustainable agriculture for their easy cultivation and environmental adaptability. From the nutritional standpoint, hey are also appreciated for their protein, fat, and starch contents as well as their amino acid and fatty acid distribution. Protein content span 20%–35%, fat 4%–7%, and starch 4%–10% per dry weight. Furthermore, the amino acid distributions are close to the WHO recommendations However, because of their bioaccumulation capacity, the safety hazards for duckweed may include the presence of heavy metals, phenols, pesticides, dioxins, and pathogens. For this reasons, safe use of duckweed protein products for food or animal feed is still awaiting the development of suitable methods to measure the contaminant level (Stomp, 2005).
