Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes, is a long-term (chronic) condition that affects the way your body processes sugar (glucose). Glucose is your body’s important source of fuel (energy). In a healthy individual, a hormone called insulin helps in the movement of sugar from the bloodstream to the body cells where it is utilized for energy.
In case of patients with type 2 diabetes, the body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. This causes a rise in the sugar levels in the bloodstream leading to symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is more common in adults; however, it is showing an increasing tendency to affect children with a rise in childhood obesity. Although there is no cure for type 2 diabetes, you may be able to manage the condition by eating well, exercising, and maintaining a healthy weight. However, if a healthy diet and regular exercise aren't enough to manage your blood sugar levels, you may need to take diabetes medications or Insulin therapy under the supervision of your doctor.
