In India, why can't even English medium students speak good English?
The role of English in the Indian Classroom ends in the Classroom itself. It is never taken home. It has no place in the market place. It has no place in the conversation of an Indian home. I don't speak of exceptions here, which are negligible in number.
In the private sector, the millenials make use of English for fancy. It is not out of necessity.
We can not use English effectively, if we think in one language and speak in a different language. Most of the time, we speak in our native language. We can not switch over to English, all of a sudden, to, in conversation.
I think that we have to cultivate spoken skills of English, taking into our actual necessity. We should not ever fall behind in our career. If we need English for our communication purposes, we must go after it and master it. We should not show any prejudice for English.
For every problem, there is a solution. For our lack of spoken skills, we can surely derive a method. We need not get dejected. For a young man, anything is possible. Even, English is within his reach.
Speaking is a skill. It doesn't find a place in our Classroom, as long as we treat it as just a medium. Let us cultivate it to such an extent that we make it our own and a part of our very being.
