the Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a noted educationalist and one of the foremost social reformers of the 19th Century. He played an important role in the first Hindu widow remarriage that took place in Kolkata in 1856. Along with Bethune, he opened the first girls school in Kolkata in in 1849. He also set up 35 schools in Bengal between 1857 and 1858.
