"Isn’t it perfect, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it.You'll have to look at your watch a hundred times a day now.Give me your watch.I want to see how they look together." Jim sat down and smile. "Della," said he,Let's put our Christmas gift away and keep them a while. They're too nice to use now.I sold the watch to get the money to buy the combs. And now I think we should have our dinner."

The following dialogue is taken from Gift of The Magi.
- The story follows Jim and Dela. The two characters are not very rich and do not have enough money but wish to get a gift for one another. In doing so they sacrifice something about themselves to buy a gift in order to gift it to one another not knowing that each gift came at the price of something they personally love.
- The story is a great commentary on the commercialization of holidays and how it is very difficult to make someone happy without a gift during the holiday season without spending money.
- The sacrifices that Jim and Dela make are significant only for something that is heavily trivia. It is something that they cannot get back in an instant but they still manage to do it so that they can please each other.
