Amines can be oxidised by using different oxidising agents under different conditions. Product of oxidation of amines depend on the oxidising agent used.

Tertiary nitroalkanes are best prepared by oxidising primary amines,having amino group attached to tertiary carbon ,by using KMnO₄.

R₃C-NH₂ + 3[O]—-KMnO₄—> R₃C-NO₂+H₂O
