The blackening of silver is due to its reaction with sulphur. (Silver does not react with oxygen even on heating).
2Ag+S=Ag2S.
Sulphur is found in air in very less quantitites. The burning of coal causes the release of sulphur. Nowadays, with an inrease in demand of powee, more coal is burnt thus more sulphur is released in the atmosphere. This increase in amount of sulphur causes silver to form silver sulfide(black layer on silver) faster.
