in the fall and winter a tree sheds its leafs so it can feed its self it doesnt need to feed the leaves
but
during the summer it grows its leafs back so it can start photosynthesis again
photosynthesis is the process of using chlorophyl [the stuff that makes leafs green] to capture sunlight and produce its own food
most plants are autotrophs meaning they MAKE their own food some plants though are both so dont confuse everything for the same
the tree or plant its self cant go through photosynthesis without leafs therefore it needs to have leafs
