Since the sperm carrying ‘X’ chromosome and sperms carrying ‘Y’ chromosome have equal/ 50—50 chance of fertilizing an egg, thus it is a matter of chance whether a couple will give birth to a male or a female child.

EXPLANATION :

The male chromosome consist of the X and Y chromosome .

Here due to separation of gamete either X or Y can fuse with the female gamete.

The female gamete consist of the X and X chromosomes both .

Here due to separation , only a X can fuse with the male .

Hence the Y chromosome and X chromosome coming from the male play an important role in determining the gender of the baby.

The male can give X during which the baby produced will be female .

The male may also give Y due to which the baby will be male .

The flowchart is in attachment .
