It is easier to push the piston of a syringe filled with air than a syringe filled with sand because gases are more compressible than solids.

Since gases are highly compressible, we don't need to put in much effort and can easily push the piston whereas, in case of any solid such as sand or chalk, we need to provide a greater effort as solids are least compressible.
