it is found that when 780cc of a gas at STP is pressurised to 2 atm, its volume

decreases to 170 cc. Find the new temperature of the gas, in Celsius scale

Answer:

Given,

Volume 1 (V₁) = 780 cc

At S.T.P,

Temperature 1 (T₁) = 273 K

Pressure (P₁) = 76 cm of Hg = 1 atm

Volume 2 (V₂) = 170 cc

Pressure (P₂) = 2 atm

According to Ideal Gas Equation,

P₁V₁/T₁ = P₂V₂/T₂

= (1*780) / 273 = (2*170) / T₂

= 780/273 = 340/T₂

= 780T₂/273 = 340

= T₂ = (340*273)/780

= T₂ = 92820/780

= T₂ = 119 K

or,

The New Temperature is = (119-273)°C

= -154°C

I hope this helps.
