I am showing you maps of Terai, Nepal showing the plain portions, elevated flatlands and hills and the mountain regions. Generally regions of higher elevations are cooler than regions of lower elevations.The air becomes thinner in higher elevations and denser in lower elevations.

Thinner air have less molecules of air receiving heat from the sun. Denser air have more molecules of air receiving heat energy from the sun. When the air molecules are so thin like that in outer space the temperature drops to very low values.

The Himalayan region are the mountain region with higher elevations. The Terai region have lower elevations thus have denser air molecules.
