"Aqua Regia" also known as 'royal water' is a mixture of Nitric acid and hydrochloric acid can dissolve noble elements like gold and platinum...
This chemical is used by some of the goldsmith's to polish the gold...We may not find a considerable loss in the first polish but later on 2 or 3 polishes we may find a loss of around 5 to 10 gms of gold...then the gold smith takes the liquid and undergoes other process to get the gold back from the liquid...It's not like all the goldsmith's does it...But,being cautious is always good...
