It is said that a preposition govern the words . what is meant by govering the words. Can this be illustrated with some examples please ?

'Governing refers to the relation between a word and its dependent .
A preposition shows the relation between words in a sentence.It expresses the relation of different things or thought to each other. (pre+position- placed before a noun or a pronoun).

For example - The book is on the table. 'On' governs 'Table'
