it is true that like charges repel each other, so how do so many protons each with positive charge stay together in a nucleus

The reason is, that the protons in the nucleus attract each other with a force which is known as The Nuclear Force. It is the strongest force which is used to make Nuclear Bombs.

So, this force makes protons to stay together.
