“It’s easy to stand in the crowd but it takes courage to stand alone.” Mahatma Gandhi – Peer Pressure

When is going against the crowd the right thing to do?

Peer pressure is real. Many students choose to follow the crowd to avoid the repercussions of not following. They feel safer, less alone. It doesn’t mean the followers fully “buy in” to the crowd beliefs or actions, but the act of standing outside the crowd feels scary. Is there a good time to face that fear and go against the crowd? How does one do it and avoid being ostracized or humiliated by the crowd? The courage comes from standing up for what you believe in, despite what the crowd says and possible threats.

Winston Churchill once said “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” Listening takes courage. Listening makes you vulnerable. It makes you put others first. By listening, you are putting your self-interest aside, and putting the needs of others first.

It is a lot better to walk alone than with a crowd going in the wrong direction. You have to learn to be independent and do things on your own. If you always rely on other people, they will not continue and have the same desire as you. Especially in times of socio-political upheaval.

When you work alone on a project, you put all of your mind into it. You have no one to distract you with opinions, ideas, or suggestions; you're like your own boss. You work on your ideas all alone and you put your own rules, so you won't worry about teammates objecting to it.
