The chapter Children At Work deals with the plight of children working in different parts and sections of India with lower than the minimal wages and their conditions. The chapter deals with the story of one such boy named Velu. Velu lived in a small village of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu with his drunkard father. His father used to mistreat him regularly. He was fed up with all this and one day he decides to run away from his village.
He got up on a train which crossed his village, without knowing where he is going and without tickets. He finally reached Chennai and was not able to stand properly on the platform because his feet was all swollen and he was hungry. He felt so lost in this big city and was not able to read most of the signs because it was written in English, though he could read Tamil. He was mesmerized by the tall buildings and traffic of the city but was very scared because he didn't know what he would do. The chapter deals with all such experiences that a runaway child has to go through their life.
