A decomposition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds.

AB ----> A + B

Example

By heat-:
1) CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2
2) 2KClO3 --> 2KCl + 3O2

By light-:
1) 2AgCl --> 2Ag + Cl2
2) 2AgBr --> 2Ag + Br2

By electricity
1) 2H2O -->2H2 + O2
2) 2NaCl --> 2Na + Cl2

 \bf{Decomposition \:reaction : -   }

The reaction in which a single compound breaks into two or more products under specific conditions like heat, light and electricity is known as decomposition reaction.

For example:-

2H_20 \xrightarrow {\rm electricity} 2H_2 +0_2

There are three types of decomposition reaction:-

1) Thermal decomposition reaction :- In this reaction, decomposition is carried out by heating the substance.

2) Photo Decomposition reaction:- In this reaction, decomposition is carried out by keeping reactant in sunlight.

3) Electrical Decomposition reaction:- In this reaction, decomposition is carried out by the passing electricity through reactant.
