In the given reaction sequence, compound A is 1,2-dibromopropane, compound B is propene and compound C is propane-1,2-diol.

CH₃ - CH = CH₂  + Br₂/CCl₄ → CH₃ - CHBr - CH₂Br (A)

The reaction of an alkene with bromine water in CCl₄ as a solvent gives a vicinal dibromoalkane containing bromine atoms on the adjacent carbon atoms.

• Thus, the reaction of propene with bromine water in CCl₄ gives 1,2-dibromopropane.

• In the reaction of a dihaloalkane with zinc dust, zinc reacts with the halogen in the dihaloalkane, thereby, producing a double bond between the adjacent carbon atoms on which the halogen was attached.

• Thus, the reaction of 1,2-dibromopropane with zinc dust produces propene along with ZnBr₂ as the by-product. The reaction may be represented as follows :

CH₃ - CHBr - CH₂Br + Zn → CH₃ - CH = CH₂ (B) + ZnBr₂

• KMnO₄ is an oxidizing agent. Therefore, on reaction with an alkene, it oxidises the alkene to a corresponding alkane-1,2 diol.

• Therefore, the reaction of propene with KMnO₄ yields propane-1,2-diol as the product. The chemical equation for the same is :

CH₃ - CH = CH₂ + alk.KMnO₄ → CH₃ - CHOH - CH₂OH (C)
