Answer:

Franz experienced these feelings because he was feeling very emotional at that time. France had lost two districts of Alsace and Lorraine to Prussia. According to a new rule issued by Berlin, German was to be taught at the schools in these two districts. Franz’s school had also been affected by the new order. His French teacher, M.Hamel was giving his last lesson. In his last lesson he was trying to teach them as much as he could; it appeared as if he wanted to give all his knowledge to his students. During this lesson Franz felt so.

The above quoted line appears in “The Last Lesson” by Alphonse Daudet.

It is a dialogue from Mr. Hamel, the French teacher of a school. At that time Berlin had overpowered the districts of Alsace and Lorraine in France and ordered to teach German language in schools in place of French.

During the last class of French in the school M. Hamel is to be disheartened and was willing to teach as much as he can to the whole class.
