It takes so long for a tree to grow
So many years of pushing the sky
Long branches stretch the arms
Reach out with their wooden fingers
Years drift by, fall like leaves
From green to yellow then back to green
Since my grandad was a boy
And then before his father's father
There's been an elm outside our
school
Its shadow long across our playground
Today three men ripped it down
Chopped it up. It took ten minutes.

This is a poem called ‘Our Tree’ made by the composer David Harmer. It comes from the time of the composer’s great great grandad. It is about an elm that is valued and has a high standard as it grew infant of generations. It has a purpose to inform and change attitudes of people. This poem is intended for all people and especially the ones who cut trees and nature. The issue and concern is because cutting trees is going for the concept of environmental sustainability which we humans in our time are not taking care of it. It also reflects on how trees take so long to grow and how ignorant humans destroy everything so fast. This is a great poem about human impact on trees and the environment making us think deeply and logically about trees. I chose this poem because this site is for teenagers and it is really important for the youth to take responsibility and be educated about the following issue.
