Molecules can be modeled as positively charged nuclei surrounded by a cloud of electrons, and the nuclei stick together due to their attraction to the electrons. When a molecule is oxidized, electrons leave the cloud. Sometimes, the electron leaves simply because the molecule is heated to a high temperature and the electron escapes, but more commonly, another nucleus (and its electron cloud) collides with the molecule and an electron becomes attracted to the other nucleus.
