The lightning bolt must have struck less than a kilometre away. The logic is simple. Light travels at such a great speed that you see it almost at the same instant that it happens. But sound travels at a speed of roughly 330 metre per second through air, so that it takes about 3 seconds to reach your ear if the lightning struck one kilometre away.
