It took the narrator quite some time to understand that what he heard as 'piper', in fact, meant 'paper' and the phrase 'mind the gap' in the Tube. What do you think caused the problem?

The given question is from the chapter- The third and final continent by Jhumpa Lahiri. The problem was caused due to the difference in language. The author faced problems with her language after shifting to the United States.

The author was well versed with his own language, i.e. Bengali and thereby found difficulty after shifting to a new country where the mode of communication was English. Also, the accent was different as compared to that in London where he stayed earlier.
