"Echolocation", the boy said to his father explaining that bats make use of ultrasonic waves in the process of echolocation. "The bats" the boy explained "produce high frequency sound which are reflected back by obstacles in the path of the bat. The bat then creates an image based on the return of the sound waves and navigate by using the map." The boy further went on "Ultrasonic waves are of frequency above 20kHz and are inaudible to human ears. These waves are used as they can travel undeviated through a long distance, can be confined to a narrow beam and are not easily absorbed by the medium. Hence ultrasonic waves are preferred over sonic waves. This the secret of the vision of bats in the dark."
