It was observed that a large number of vultures were dying around a crop field. Considering the fact that vultures are top consumers, explain the phenomenon that may have caused their death in large numbers.

The phenomenon is drug toxicity. In the crop field, a domestic cattle might have died which was given the drug Diclofenac which is an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat inflammation, fever, pain. This drug is present in the body of the animal and the vulture when fed to the remains of the animal have consumed the drug. This drug causes kidney failure which causes the uric acid to accumulate in the body which crystallizes around the internal organs causing a condition called visceral gout. This then results in the death of the bird.
