Question :-

It would take 150 minutes to fill a swimming pool using the water from five taps. How many minutes would it take if only three of the taps are used ?

\large\underline{\sf{Solution-}}

Given that,

It would take 150 minutes to fill a swimming pool using the water from 5 taps.

We have to find, how many minutes would it take if only three of the taps are used.

We know, as number of taps less to fill a swimming pool, it would take more time to fill a swimming pool.

It means, number of taps and time taken are in inverse variation.

Let assume that time taken by 3 taps to fill a swimming pool be x minutes.

So,

\begin{array}{|c|c|c|c} \hline \rm Number \: of \: taps&\rm 5&\rm 3  \\ \hline\rm Time \: taken \: (in \: minutes)&\rm 150&\rm x \\ \hline   \end{array} \\

Now, using law of inverse variation, we have

\rm \: 5 \times 150 = 3 \times x \\

\rm \: 5 \times 50 = x \\

\rm\implies \:x = 250 \: minutes \\

So, 250 minutes would it take, if only three of the taps are used.

.

Concept Used :-

Inverse Variation :- Two variables x and y are said to be in inverse or indirect variation, if there is increase in x, then there is decrease in y or if there is decrease in x, then there is increase in y.
