This style of painting is identified with a contrived sort of elegance, almost the opposite of naturalistic painting. To achieve this ''mannered'' style, painters would distort the human forms and objects in their compositions. These painters wanted more freedom to create images outside of how nature presented them, and often used fanciful artificial shapes and unrealistic proportions to achieve this virtuosity. The Italian Mannerists used an extreme form of the technique called chiaroscuro, the use of a dark background to highlight a subject in bright light.
