Why does the battery discharge when its positive and negative terminals

The conductor is basically setting a pathway for the electrons. The electrons from the negative terminal of the battery flow to higher potential,i.e, positive terminal of battery. The conductor facilitates this movement with its large number of free electrons. However we cannot say a battery discharges since it's potential difference always remains a constant( if ideal). We use term discharge for capacitors instead.
