First, draw the complete structure:

=> I have attached the full structure below in an image.

Some Definitions to be clear with:

=> Prefix - The part of the IUPAC name that gives us the substituents and their respective locants (numbering) .

=> Root Word - The part of the IUPAC name that gives us the number of Carbon atoms found in the longest Carbon-Carbon chain.

=> Primary Suffix - The part of the IUPAC name that gives us the type of Carbon-Carbon bonds the molecule contains. (single bonds, double bonds, triple bonds OR any two or more of these three together) and their locants.

=> Secondary Suffix - The part of the IUPAC name that gives us the Principal functional group present and its locant (if any) .

Observation of molecule and making conclusions:

1) Root Word -

  • Clearly, the longest Carbon-Carbon chain consists of six atoms (from diagram) .
  • So, the root word will be "hex" .

2) Primary Suffix -

  • Here, only Carbon-Carbon single bonds are present.
  • So, the Primary Suffix will be "an" ( 'e' is removed from "ane" because there is no need to add a vowel because the vowel is provided by the Secondary Suffix) .

3) Secondary Suffix -

  • Here, two functional groups are visible -
  1. Carboxyl group (-COOH)
  2. Ketonic group ( -C=O) in surrounded by two carbon atoms.
  • Greater preference is given to Carboxyl group than to the Ketonic group .
  • Thus, we use the Secondary suffix of "-oic acid"

4) Prefix -

  • We use the substituent form of the Ketonic group i.e. "oxo" for making the Prefix.
  • Since numbering always should give the Principal functional group i.e. Carboxyl group the lowest possible locant.
  • So, we begin numbering from the right of the molecule .
  • In this way, the oxo group gets the locant of 5 .
  • Thus, the Prefix is "5-Oxo" .

5) IUPAC Name -

  • Prefix + Root word + Primary suffix + Secondary Suffix
  • So, the IUPAC Name is -

     >> 5-Oxohexanoic acid
