Steps to follow:

=> First, draw the structure of the molecule. I have attached the structure below.

=> Find the longest carbon chain and accordingly decide the root word.

  • Here, the longest, continuous carbon chain consists of 3 carbon atoms, so the root word is "prop" .

=> Number the longest carbon chain, so that the substituents/ Functional groups get lowest possible numbering.

  • Here, the oxygen atom bonded with the methyl group is called as a methoxy group , here, it is a substituent, it gets the lowest possible numbering of two however we number (bottom to top or top to bottom).
  • So, the prefix becomes "2-Methoxy" .

=> Decide the suffix of the molecule depending on the type of bonds present or the principal functional group.

  • Here, no principal functional group is present. (Other than ether )
  • Only single bonds are present.
  • So, the suffix will be "ane" .

=> Now, write the IUPAC name as shown :

   " prefix + root word + suffix "

  • So, the IUPAC name is 2-Methoxypropane .

So, the correct answer is (B) 2-Methoxypropane .

More to know:

=> This molecule is an ether, as it has has the general formula:

R-O-R' .

=> For ethers, to write the common name we write:

↭ "1st alkyl group + 2nd alkyl group + -ether " .

↭ Here, the alkyl groups are written alphabetically.

=> The alkyl groups present are isopropyl and methyl .

=> Thus, the common name will be: isopropyl methyl ether .
