To find : IUPAC name of given compound

Important point :

  • Select the major chain , the chain with major functional groups (if present) with maximum number of carbon atom with it
  • The functional groups must be given the smallest possible number
  • If there is no functional group (like in this case) numbering is done such that the branch chain gets the lowest possible number

Procedure :

  • Either we can , name it in the way it is given (line diagram)
  • Or we can , firstly covert into simple form (writing C & H)

Solution :

  • The main branch contain 7 Carbon atom hence "hept" will be used
  • The numbering could be done in two ways , as shown in attachment , the red one and the black one.
  • While using red numbering , side chain get number of 4,4&5
  • While using black numbering , side chain get 3,4&4
  • As we know 3<4 , so we will use the black numbering
  • The side chain include, 1ethyl group and 2methyl group . As ethyl (e) comes before methyl (m) , it will be written 1st

Naming :

3-ethyl-4,4-dimethylhetpane

ANSWER : 3-ethyl-4,4-dimethylhetpane
