A standing wave is produced on a string fixed at one end and free at other having a  length which is an :

(b) integral multiple of λ / 4

The length can be calculated as follows:

  • As per the question, the string is fixed at only one end
  • Therefore, the standing waves are produced if-

        ν = (n+½)v/2L

        L = (n+½)/2

           =(2n+1)*/4

  • Here, n = 0, 1, 2, 3, ....
  • Thus, the length must be an integral multiple of λ / 4.
