I think that it is all dependent on the character of the person. If you are referring to Shakespeare's thoughts, then yes, he would have believed that force of character goes a long way in changing the course of one's life. Look at Romeo and Juliet. The force of their love and, additionally, their headstrong foolishness definitely changed the course of their lives.
