J) Luis throws four stones having the same weight on four different surfaces. The
surfaces are icy, dry, sandy and cemented. He throws each stone with same
force. On which of the given surfaces will the stone go to maximum distance
before it stops?

Answer: Icy

Explanation:

This is so because the icy surface will be slippery due to ice and water residue on it. Not only the stone, anything that goes on the icy surface is likely to slip. There won't be much friction offered by the surface.

If we talk about the sandy surface, the stone won't go far and will be stopped at the nearest point possible and it's also possible that the stone will settle down in the surface.

The dry and cemented surfaces will cause friction when the stone will be thrown on them, which will stop the stone from going far away.

Answer:

On Icy surface the stone will cover maximum distance . Before it comes to rest

Explanation:

  • As we know that frictional force will oppose the relative motion of one object over the surface of another object.
  • Frictional force is due to interlocking of the irregularities of the surfaces .
  • Frictional force depend on nature of surfaces. Rough surface will have more friction than smooth surface.
  • Rough surface offers maximum friction and the object comes to rest by covering less distance
  • So, here the stone covers more distances on icy surface as it offers least friction compared to other surfaces.
