Jaideep travels from Alaska, which is on a highway,to Burgen, which is 16 km from the highway. Thedistance between Alaska and Burgen along a straightline is 34 km. At what point should Jaideep turn fromthe highway to reach Burgen in the shortest possibletime, if his speed along the highway is 10 km/h and6 km/h otherwise.(a) 30 km away from A(b) 20 km away from A(c) 18 km away from A(d) 15 km away from A

(i) If diagonals of a quadrilateral bisect each other then it is a rhombus, parallelogram, rectangle or square. (ii) If diagonals of a quadrilateral are perpendicular bisector of each other, then it is a rhombus or square. (iii) If diagonals are equal, then it is a square or rectangle.

Answer:

Answer is 30 km away.

Explanation:

Given :

Distance between Alaska to Burgen (In straight line) : 34 km

Distance between Turning point to Burgen = 16 km

To find :

Distance between Alaska to turning point

Solution :

  • If we try to draw the figure from given conditions, it will somewhat look like the figure given below.
  • From the figure, we can conclude that the path travelled by Jaideep is a Right angled triangle.

∴With the help of Pythagoras Theorem, we can find out required distance.

We know that,

In Pythagoras theorem,

(Hypotenuse) ^{2}  = (Side 1) ^{2} + (Side 2)^{2}

34^{2} = x^{2}  + 16^{2}

∴ 1156 = x^{2} + 256

∴ 1156 - 256 = x^{2}

x^{2} = 900

∴ x = ± 30

But,

Distance can never be negative, so

x = 30 km

∴ After 30 km Jaideep needs to take a turn.
