Jake things of a number. He adds 5 then multiplies the result by 2. The answer is the same as 5 times the number take away 14. What number did Jake think of?

Let's assume that the number Jake thought of is 'x'

2 (x + 5) = 5x - 14

2x + 10 = 5x - 14

2x - 5x = - 14 - 10

- 3x = - 24

x = - 24 ÷ (- 3)

x = 8

Verification:

LHS = 2 (x + 5)

= 2 (8 + 5)

= 2 × 13

= 26

RHS = 5x - 14

= 5 × 8 - 14

= 40 - 14

= 26
