cost of 1 cheaper lamp=85,

then

cost of 5 cheaper lamps=85×5=425,

therefore

left money=1000-425=575,

now the remaining 575 rs. will be the cost of 5 costlier lamps,

then

cost of 1 costlier lamp=575/5,

=115 rs.

The price of one of the costlier kind is  Rs.115.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

James bought  5 each of two kinds of CFL bulbs for 1000 rupees.

The price of the cheaper lamp is 85 rupees a piece.

To Find:

The price of one of the costlier kind.

Solution:

As given, The price of the cheaper lamp is 85 rupees a piece.

Cost of 1 piece of cheap CFL = Rs.85

Cost of 5 pieces of cheap CFL =5\times 85= Rs.425

Let the price of 1 piece of costlier  CFL is p.

Cost of 5 pieces of costlier  CFL = 5p.

As given, James bought  5 each of two kinds of CFL bulbs for 1000 rupees.

425+5p=1000

5p=1000-425

5p=575

p=\frac{575}{5}

  = Rs.115

Thus,the price of one of the costlier kind is  Rs.115.
