Walking 3/4 of his usual speed, James reaches his home 10 minutes later than his normal time w. What is the normal time he takes to reach his home?

Concept:

An object's speed is the rate at which it moves. The ability of an object to move quickly or slowly is a very fundamental idea in motion. Distance is exactly proportional to velocity when time is constant, hence speed is simply distance divided by time.

Mathematically, the formula for speed, distance, and time is as follows:

Speed = Distance/Time

Where,

speed in milliseconds,

d = Travel distance in metres,

t = total time in s.

Formula for distancetravelled

D=s x t

where, s =speed

             t= time taken

Given:

Walking 3/4 of his usual speed, James reaches his home 10 minutes later than his normal time w

Find:

What is the normal time he takes to reach his home?

Solution:

Normal time to reach home = T

Let the distance travelled = d

Let his usual speed be v

Now

d/v =T ---------------i

When the speed is 3/4v James reach is delayed by 10minutes.

d/3v/4=T+10 --------------ii

Dividing the two equations

d x 3v / v x 4d = T / T+10

3/4 = T/T+10

3T+30 = 4T

T= 30 minutes

Therefor, the normal time he reaches home is 30 minutes.
