Since partition, Jammu and Kashmir has faced several troubles. Pakistan owns a portion of it and wants to acquire more while India considers it to be part of its territory. So, it has lead to a state of emergency and insurgency even triggering terrorism too. It is mostly either circumscribed with the Indian Army contingent for its protection or a curfew imposed. Many restrictions are also there. Even the daily needs are met with difficulty. People need to cross a lot of hurdle to even get basic amenities of doctors, schools, etc. So, it is thinly populated.

Jammu and Kashmir thinly populated because of the following reasons:

1. The harsh climatic conditions in the valley.
2. Ever since partition, J & K has been bone of contention between India and Pakistan and with the passage of time, the situation has become bad to worse not leaving any room of safely and security of common citizen. People living there were under constant threat of terrorism and hence many families were uprooted from their ancestral land and forced to take refuge in other parts of the country. Education suffered and business collapsed, leaving no room for their sustenance.
