Jammu and Kashmir is a very unsocial state where people live in danger of terrorist attacks due to the reason that it is situated in the border....some people don't prefer it as it has less job offers and has communication problems....the climatic condition is also a reason for the non preference....so outsiders don't prefer that place...and as for the locals...their kids also move out for better job options...

It is thinly populated as most of the place is taken away by the wide range of the Himalayan mountains and only some place is left for living. The climate is too harsh and it is very cold.
