GIVEN:

  • Total stamps = 427
  • Janet collected three times as many stamps as Jed. Ian collected 21 stamps less than Janet.

TO FIND:

  • Stamps collected by Lan

SOLUTION:

Let stamps collected by Jed be x

Stamps collected by Janet = 3x ( 3 times of Jed )

Stamps collected by Lan = 3x - 21 ( 21 less than Janet )

Total stamps = 427

Thus, the equation formed,

=> x + 3x + 21 = 427

=> 7x + 21 = 427

=> 7x = 427 + 21 = 448

=> x = 448/7 = 64

Stamps collected by Jed = x = 64

Stamps collected by Janet = 3x = 192

Stamps collected by Lan = 3x - 21 = 192

ANSWER :

Stamps collected by Lan is 171

VERIFICATION:

Sum of all the stamps must be equal to 427

=> 64 + 192 + 171 = 427

Hence, verified.
