Janine is going to use her clinometer to measure the height of the tree near her house. She is worried that it may hit her home if it falls in a big storm, and has measured that its base is 18m away from her house. Janine is 1.80m tall. Her eyes are 10cm from the top of her head. The horizontal distance between Janine’s eyes and the tree is 20 meters. The clinometer measures the angle from Janine’s eye level to the top of the tree to be 40 degrees.

Write down the height of the tree.
Should Janine be worried about the tree hitting her house? Justify your answer.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

The height of the tree above her head is= 20 tan 40 degrees - 0.10m

                                                                     =16.68m

Now total height of the tree = 16.68 m+1.80 m

                                              = 18.48 m
