"Japanese" use a new method of "soil-less agriculture". This method is known as "polymer film method".  

This method is so efficient that it enables plants to grow on any flat surface. It is made up of hydrogel which is a highly absorbent material. It consists of numerous nano sized pores each of which measures "one millionth of a millimetre" in diameter. It is on the top of this gel that the plants grow. The roots do not dig deep into the gel, but spread like a fan on the top of the film.
