Jay starts riding his bicycle and attains a velocity of 6m s-1

in 30s.Then he

applies brakes such that the velocity of the bicycle reduces to 4m s

-1

in 5 s.

Calculate the acceleration of the bicycle in both the cases.

Answer:

a1 = 0.2 m/s² ; a2 = (–0.4)m/s²

Explanation:

Initial velocity = u

Final velocity = v

Time = t

Acceleration = a

We know that ,

v = u + at

v–u = at

a = (v-u)/ t

I st case,

v=6m/s

u=0m/s

t=30s

a=(6-0)/30 m/s²

= 6/30 m/s²

= 0.2 m/s²

II nd case,

v=4m/s

u=6m/s

t=5s

a=(4‐6)/5 m/s²

= (-2/5) m/s²

= (-0.4) m/s² (Retardation) or ( Negative acceleration)
