Explanation:
To Find -
- Which of the following major product can be obtained from Gabriel phthalimide synthesis ?
Solution -
When a phthalimide is treated with alcoholic KOH then it forms potassium phthalimide (salt). Then, heating potassium phthalimide with alkyl halide it forms N-alkyl phthalimide. Then, treating N-alkyl phthalimide with aqueous NaOH it forms
sodium phthalate and 1° amine is produced.
Process -
( Refer to the attachment. )
Note -
- This method produces only 1° Amine.
- This method isn't used for the preparation of aromatic primary amine because aryl halide do not undergo Nucleophillic substitution with the anion formed by phthalimide.
- Here, Option 4 is 3° Amine and This synthesis produces only 1° Amine. So, Option 4 is wrong
- Option 3 is 2° Amine. So, Option 3 is also wrong.
- Option 2 is 1° Amine but it's aromatic primary amine. So, Option 2 is also wrong.
- Option 1 is 1° Amine. So, Option 1 is correct.
Hence,
CH2=CH-NH2 is the major product can be obtained from Gabriel phthalimide synthesis.
Therefore,
Option 1 is correct.
