in a metal oxide, oxide ions crystallises in ccp lattice in which metal M1 occupies 50% of octahedral voids and M2 occupies 12.5 % of tetrahedral voids.

To find : The oxidation states of metal M1 and M2 respectively are..

solution : in cubic closed packed (ccp) lattice, effective no of O²¯ ions = no of ions in corner + no of ions on face centre

= 8 × 1/8 + 6 × 1/2 = 4

in ccp lattice

no of tetrahedral voids = 2 × no of octahedral voids

but no of tetrahedral voids = 8

so no of octahedral voids = 4

given M1 occupies 50% of octahedral voids and M2 occupies 12.5 % of tetrahedral voids

so, no of M1 ions = 50% of 4 = 2

no of M2 ions = 12.5 % of 8 = 1

Therefore molecular formula of compound is M1₂M2₁O₄

if oxidation state of M1 = +2

then, oxidation state of M2 = 8 - 4 = +4

hence correct option is (1) +2, +4
