Answer:

Let x be the speed of John. Then speed of Jude =9−x

Time taken by John = x20

Time taken by Jude = 9−x20

Time (John) + Time (Jude) =9 hours.

x20+9−x20=9

20(9−x)+20x=9x(9−x)

180=81x−9x2

Divide 9 on both sides, we get

x2−9x+20=0

On factoring, we get

(x−5)(x−4)=0

x=5 or 4

Time taken by John = x20

= 520 =4 hours.

Answer:

Let x be the speed of John. Then speed of Jude =9−x

Time taken by John =

x

20

Time taken by Jude =

9−x

20

Time(John) + Time(Jude) =9 hours.

x

20

+

9−x

20

=9

20(9−x)+20x=9x(9−x)

180=81x−9x

2

Divide 9 on both sides, we get

x

2

−9x+20=0

On factoring, we get

(x−5)(x−4)=0

Hence, the speed of Jude is 4 kmph.
