Let the total no. Of books Jill has be 'x'
She sold half of her books = x × 1/2
= x/2
She bought 16 more books
The total no. Of book Jill has now = 16
:. x/2 + 16 = 36
x/2 = 36-16...........[when we bring the left hand side digit to right hand side or the right hand side digit to left hand side the sing changes (× becomes ÷ and + becomes - )(÷ becomes × and - becomes +)]
x/2=20
x=20 × 2
x=40
She begins with 40 books
